Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial arts in the world, originating in Kerala, India, around 3,000 years ago. It was practiced to train warriors in agility, strength, and discipline. The word comes from βKalariβ (battlefield/gymnasium) and βPayattuβ (fight or practice). Known for its graceful movements, weapons training, and healing techniques, it is often called the βMother of Martial Arts.β
Today, Kalaripayattu is taught in traditional schools called Kalaris across Kerala. It has gained international recognition and is performed in cultural festivals worldwide. Beyond self-defense, it is celebrated as a blend of martial art, dance, yoga, and Ayurveda. Even Bollywood and Hollywood films have drawn inspiration from its moves.
