Field Hockey holds a special place in India’s sporting history. Introduced during the British era, hockey became immensely popular and was declared the national game of India. Between 1928 and 1980, India dominated the sport, winning 8 Olympic gold medals. Legendary players like Dhyan Chand, known as the “Wizard of Hockey”, brought worldwide fame to India.
Today, India continues to perform strongly in international tournaments. The Indian men’s team won the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, ending a 41-year wait. The women’s hockey team has also risen to prominence, finishing 4th in the Tokyo Olympics. With renewed focus on sports infrastructure, hockey is once again gaining momentum in India.
